'I'm doing an IT Apprenticeship and get to tell my old teachers what to do!' – Zac's story

My name is Zac Manning and I'm 17. I first read about apprenticeships on the Connexions 360 website.

Now I'm an Apprentice ICT Assistant; basically I just help out the school's ICT techy. I really like working with children but don’t have the patience to be a teacher. Now I can tell my old teachers what to do! It’s a bit like work experience but with a salary and goals!

I'm working towards an NVQ (National Vocational Qualification) level 1. I spend one day a week at college.

What's the most challenging part?

Coming up against new computer-related problems that I need to solve, although it's always satisfying when I do.

What do you enjoy most?

My work environment. It's generally a very friendly place.

What difference has doing this apprenticeship made to your lifestyle?

I can't sleep till 2pm anymore, which sucks. But on a serious note, I now have an income, which is always good.

What advice would you give someone else who was considering applying for an apprenticeship?

First and foremost, go for it! Other than that, make sure you get along with your supervisor. If you and your supervisor have a good relationship, it can really make your apprenticeship enjoyable.
