Stay safe out and about

You may hear and see lots of media stories about violent crimes but actually they are quite rare. There are lots of things you can do to stay safe when you are out and about.

Before you go out

Before you go out ask yourself a few questions.

  • Where am I going?
  • Does someone know where I will be?
  • How am I going to get there?
  • How am I going to get back? Do I have enough cash for a taxi home?

When you’re out

    Stay as a group

If you’re out with friends stay together and make sure everyone gets home safely.

Keep an eye on your personal belongings

If you’re in a busy crowd, carry your bag in front of you

    Don’t walk and text

Know what's going on around you and don’t make yourself a target for phone thieves.

    Look confident

Look confident, even if you have to pretend.

Don’t be afraid to say ‘no’

If you feel pressured into doing anything you don’t want to do, stop and think. What are you comfortable with? Will you be risking your safety?

Drink and drugs – be aware

If you drink or take drugs be aware that they affect your senses and ability to make safe choices.

    Avoid confrontation

If you see another group or gang and think that there might be trouble, then try to avoid confrontation.

    Stick to well-lit streets

Stay where you can be seen, and stick to streets that you know.

If you feel in danger, take action

If you feel in danger, there are simple steps you can take.

    Trust your instincts

If you feel freaked out, cross the road, change seats on the bus or go into a shop. Don’t worry about looking stupid.

    Make some noise

Make as much noise as you can. Your voice can be your best defence. Shout a specific instruction like ‘call the police’.

    Try not to panic

Remember, if you stay in control, you are more likely to stay safe.

Don’t try to fight or be a hero

Hand over your wallet or bag if threatened.

    Call 999

Call 999, free, and ask for the police. Give them the information they ask for and stay on the line.
