Tasters and work skills for over-16s


Are you aged 16 or over, not in school or college and wondering what to do next? Here are some training courses that can help you build the skills and confidence to move forward.

Workskills programme

The Workskills programme at Sussex Downs College will support young people aged 16 to 18 (19-24 in receipt of a means tested benefit). There will be two start dates across the academic year in September and January. The course will equip you with the skills and confidence to progress into employment, voluntary work and further studies. As part of the course you will gain a Workskills qualification and English & Maths (if appropriate). You will take part in vocational tasters and go on a work placement. You will be supported throughout the course and as you progress on to mainstream college courses, training or work.

The Prince’s Trust Team Programme in East Sussex

Are you aged 16 - 25 and currently not in employment or education? Give your life a kick start and join the 12-week Prince’s Trust Team programme! You’ll improve your confidence, gain new skills and qualifications and meet new people. It’s free, you won’t lose your benefits and you’ll get the chance to:

  • work on a community project
  • spend a week away on an action-packed team building residential course
  • complete a two-week work placement
  • write a great CV plus practise your interview skills
  • give a speech at your final presentation, and much more!

Opt into programme

Opt in 2

Opt Into is the right programme for you if you are 16 to 18 and are not yet ready for a full-time college course, work or training. Opt Into will help you to get back on track and think about what to do next. You will come in 12 hours a week and will be in a small group. You will still be able to get your benefits and we will pay your travel.
